Launching in March 2025.
Beyond Hysterical is a six-part limited podcast series that explores solutions to gender bias and discrimination in healthcare.
Women’s health is firmly on Australia’s national agenda. The federal government has formed a National Women's Health Advisory Council, while the Victorian government recently launched an Inquiry into Women’s Pain.
A recent survey (#EndGenderBias) confirmed what chronically ill women and gender-diverse folks have known for many years: medical misogyny is widespread, and it’s experienced even more by women with disability, First Nations and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse women, and LGBTQ individuals.
Two in three women say they've experienced medical misogyny. Women say they often feel dismissed, disbelieved or stereotyped as “hysterical” when seeking healthcare, especially in relation to sexual and reproductive health and chronic pain.
Discussions around the scale of this problem are gaining traction. What’s needed now are fast, evidence-based responses to this social problem. That’s where Beyond Hysterical comes in.
Through engaging storytelling, a diverse range of interviews and a thorough analysis of research and data, the podcast moves the conversation forward to explaining, assessing and proposing a wide range of practical solutions that could improve the healthcare experiences of women and gender-diverse people.
Hosted, scripted, and produced by Grace Jennings-Edquist— a health journalist and author with lived experience of chronic illness — the podcast features interviews by lived experience advocates, researchers and other experts.
Beyond Hysterical: Tackling medical misogyny, one episode at a time.
